Heron Pond is a four season farm that grows over 250 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. Farming year-round has allowed us to grow and maintain an incredibly skilled and experienced staff whose passion brings higher yields, quality and flavor to our food all year long.
Heron Pond Farm is hiring one full time paid tomato intern to work directly under our current tomato grower.
This position has room for growth and to potentially take over tomato management on the farm. We are looking for someone with an interest in spending most of the season on this particular crop. Farming experience is prefered but in-depth knowledge on growing tomatoes inside green houses and high tunnels isn’t a requirement. This position will be assisting in four early tomato greenhouses and an acre of high tunnels that makes up our main season crop. We focus on extending the tomato season on both ends of the year.
Task include but are not limited to:
Opening and closing greenhouses/high tunnels daily depending on temperature and weather.
Staking and trellising in the high tunnels and clipping/tying in greenhouses.
Planting and general maintenance of crop.
Irrigation management in all of the greenhouses/high tunnels.
Skinning and removing plastic on high tunnels.
Pruning and suckering.
Heron Pond is a 60-acre diversified vegetable farm so there will be moments where you may get pulled to help in other farm tasks.
Strong work ethic, dependable, and excellent attention to detail.
Enthusiasm and the ability to work at a fast pace both independently or as part of a team.
Ability to work in adverse weather (temperatures get fairly high in the high tunnels).
Valid drivers’ license and dependable transportation is a must.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Takes well to daily instructions with the ability to execute tasks on their own.
Past experience on a vegetable farm and/or a strong interest in tomato production are preferred.
Sense of humor and easy going personality.
Compensation based off of prior work experience.
