Blue Heron Organic Farm is looking for farm workers for the 2015 farming season (June, July and August)!
This will be farmer Ellery Kimball's fifteenth season running this certified organic farm. The farm produces seven acres of diversified annual crops including a large pick-your-own flower garden. Produce is sold from a road-side stand located on the farm, to over a dozen restaurants in the Boston area (twice a week) and two farmer's markets. Although more a farm job than an internship, workers will learn a variety of skills including: transplanting, cultivation, harvesting as well as preparing vegetables for retail and deliveries. The job mostly involves the cultivation and weeding of crops. We do not use tractors for cultivation so all weeding is done by hand. Workers will also learn other relevant organic farming practices such as crop rotation, soil management, composting, pest and disease control, leading groups of volunteers and selling produce at farmer's markets. Employees must have a great sense of humor, be efficient and hard working, have a positive attitude, have good knees and a strong back, be able to lift 50 pounds, work well independently as well as with others and have a passion for organic agriculture and the environment. Workers must also be friendly, positive and helpful with customers, volunteers and children who come to visit the farm. We work in the field rain or shine (100% outside, as there are no buildings on the farm.) We do not offer housing.
Blue Heron Organic Farm is looking for workers who can commit to 30-35 hours a week. The schedule would include: all day Mondays and Fridays (7am-5pm), afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1-6pm) and possibly some hours on Saturdays as well. June, July, August only. We can work out a schedule around those work days.
To apply please send a resume and cover letter to farmer Ellery Kimball (ellerywk@hotmail.com). Interviews will be starting in March.
