Weatherlow Farms sits atop one of the highest points in bucolic Westport, MA. Our 200 rolling acres of pasture, field, woodlands, and wetlands are home to a growing abundance of domesticated animals and wildlife. We currently produce the highest quality grass fed beef, lamb, poultry, chevon and pork and run a specialty cut flower business.
Job Description: Supervise and coordinate the operation of the on-farm livestock production and the land-restoration division.
Reports To: Farm Owner
Duties & Responsibilities:
Management of On-Farm Livestock
*Train and supervise employees in all aspects of livestock management
*Source animals and draft contracts
*Design and implement grazing program
*Improve/maintain pasture quality
*Make suggestions for infrastructure improvements
*Maintain animal welfare
*Coordinate all aspects of animal processing
*Assist in marketing
*Source all necessary inputs
*Maintain supplies inventory
*Assist in budgeting and business planning
Management of Land Restoration Division
*Train and supervise employees in moving goats
*Source animals and equipment
*Manage all aspects of customer relations including estimates & billings
*Design and implement grazing program
*Maintain animal welfare
*Make recommendations for and coordinate soil improvements
*Provide a trained herding dog
*Assist in grant applications
*Assist in budgeting and business planning
Employee Management
*Recruit employees
*Train employees in appropriate aspects of livestock care and marketing
*Develop job descriptions, policies and procedures
*Develop and delegate daily tasks and planning
*Schedule farm and marketing duties
Marketing Management
*Apply for and organize farmers markets
*Help price product and design buying options
*Work farm store and farmers markets as needed
Knowledge and Skills Required
*At least 15 years grazing and livestock management experience
*Thorough knowledge of soil management and fertilizer placement
*Diverse knowledge of veterinary interventions and health maintenance
*Experience in working with processors and all facets of direct marketing
*Experience with tractor operation and driving truck and trailer
*Ability to work with a broad spectrum of people
*Well suited to represent the farm
