Assistant Farm Manager
Farm:
Gaining Ground Farm is seeking an assistant farm manager. Gaining Ground is a 3 acre non-profit organic farm in Concord, MA. that grows produce for hunger relief organizations with the help of volunteers.
Gaining Ground grows over 60,000 pounds of produce, donating to 12 hunger relief organizations in the greater Boston area, with the help of over 3,000 volunteers. Our focus is growing nutrient dense produce through soil fertility with the use of technology, hand tools and low till/bio-intensive farming practices. The job is fast-paced, high energy and highly rewarding.
Position:
Assistant Farm Manager
February 1st- December 1st average of 40 hours per week, with possibility to extend throughout winter.
Salary Based on experience, competitive.
Responsibilities:
Work directly with farm manager implementing all aspects of the farm including, sugaring, greenhouse work, field preparations with BCS tractor, soil fertility, irrigation, cover cropping, planting, cultivating, harvesting, distribution to recipients.
Provide informal education about organic farming to visitors and volunteers
Speak at events about farming and hunger relief
Operate a variety of machines, including tractor and BCS tractor
Directly responsible for managing our online “Schedule Once” volunteer sign up system to coordinate volunteers of all ages and abilities.
Qualifications:
Minimum two years full seasons experience on organic production farms.
Ability to work with farm manager, as well as independently.
Ability to lead and work with apprentices and volunteers.
Comfort interacting with active board and food pantry staffs.
Good sense of humor and a strong work ethic.
Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks in all types of weather conditions.
Organized and attentive to detail.
Experience with orchards, small fruits, medicinal/culinary herbs, cut flowers a BIG plus
Interest in hunger relief, farm education, social justice.
