Newton Community Farm, Inc. is hiring an Assistant Farm Manager for the 2018 growing season. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about local, sustainable agriculture and working in a community-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will be hard-working, creative, self-motivated, and excited to work with the public.
Newton Community Farm is a 2.25 acre intensive market garden. We grow on one acre, including 2 moveable high tunnels, one smaller high tunnel, and a greenhouse. Our markets include an 80-share Summer CSA; 40-share Late Fall CSA; 5 day per week farm stand; a weekly farmers’ market; twice weekly food donations; and occasional restaurant sales. The farm is incorporated as a 501c3 educational non-profit and offers educational programming year round as well as four major public events during the growing season.
The Assistant Farm Manager helps manage all aspects of farm operations and reports directly to the Farm Manager. In addition to working along-side the Farm Manager in the day to day farming activities, the Assistant Farm Manager has primary responsibility for managing CSA sharers and other volunteers during public volunteer hours and supervising farm stand workers to manage daily farm stand operations.
The Assistant Farm Manager also works closely with the Farm Manager in determining CSA harvest; works occasionally with our Education Coordinator to integrate education programs and/or group visits into farm operations and maintain the Learning Garden; and helps staff, in conjunction with Farm Manager, to manage our weekly Farmers’ Market. Other responsibilities include greenhouse work; planting and harvesting; weeding and field prep using our walking tractors.
The Assistant Farm Manager position requires excellent people skills; attention to detail; and an ability to work independently and with limited supervision. Openness to learning new skills is essential. This is a physically demanding job requiring the ability to lift, bend, squat, kneel, bend, etc., and do so in all weather conditions.
Minimum two seasons farm experience, valid driver’s license, and good driving record required.
Hours, Salary & Benefits
The Assistant Farm Manager position is part-time in mid-March, full-time from April to mid-November, then part-time again from mid-November through mid-December. Competitive pay rate based on experience. Produce from the farm is included with the position, as is attendance at winter farming conferences.
Our goal is to farm in a way that is sustainable not only for the land but also for the workers. Our work week is approximately 40 hours per week and while we cannot offer paid vacation, it is possible to arrange for time off during the summer if desired. Sick time is accrued according to MA law and is unpaid.
