Apprentice/Assistant Alpaca Shearer

Harvard Alpaca Shearing is searching for a motivated individual to join our 2022 shearing team. This is a very unique opportunity for the right individual who is interested in being immersed in the alpaca shearing world for a 5-month stint from March to July 2022. This seasonal position is not for everyone as it involves long hours and hard work and an abundance of travel on the East Coast of the U.S. The chosen candidate will work alongside the head shearer, assisting in all phases of the operation, shearing hundreds of alpacas/llamas and some other critters along the way. Experience with alpacas/llamas is a plus, but comfort around livestock is a must. Shearing experience is desired, but not required. Training is provided and the candidate needs to be a quick learner. Candidate must be able to lift 75 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes all meals/ accommodations while on the road. Accommodations will range from camping to hotels with the occasional overnight in the company van, when necessary. As such, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to roll with ups and downs of life on the road are required.  If you have a spirit of adventure and love animals, this may be the job for you.

For more information or to apply, email your interest and/or resume to Rusty Varrell, Harvard Alpaca Shearing, at harvardalpacashearing@gmail.com by February 1st. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to the full season from March to July.
