Asst. Grower position at Waltham Fields

Assistant Grower for 2016 Season

Waltham Fields Community Farm seeks one Assistant Grower for the 2016 season.  Located in Waltham, just outside of Boston, WFCF is a non-profit organization featuring a mixed vegetable farm that provides for educational and food access programming.  We adhere strictly to organic methods to manage fifteen acres of leased farmland.  The Assistant Grower will work to support our farming operation, helping to supply food for our 460-share CSA, community members in need, and for various public events throughout the season.

The Assistant Grower will work with our experienced farm managers to learn the ins and outs of vegetable growing, crew management, equipment operation and maintenance and farm planning on a vibrant, fast-paced, 15-acre community farm.  Assistant Growers are considered farm managers-in-training; we emphasize strong, individualized in-the-field instruction and experience as well as regular field walks and participation in CRAFT workshops.  We expect applicants to have a powerful work ethic and a sense of humor about farming and themselves.  We prefer candidates with some farm experience and a desire to farm for a living in the future.  A valid driver’s license, the ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle, and the ability to lift 50 pounds are important qualifications for the Assistant Grower position.  In order to better know if this farm and organization is a good fit, we strongly prefer on-farm interviews.

This full-time, seasonal position runs from April through October 2016, with the potential to extend hours through November.  No partial season applications for this position are possible.  The Assistant Grower generally works Tuesdays-Saturdays, with rotating Sunday watering duties.  Assistant Growers are expected to work hours as needed on the farm and variation of schedule is to be expected throughout the growing season.  Compensation includes $600 per week, produce from the farm, a health insurance stipend, a professional development stipend, and paid time off commensurate with WFCF’s personnel policies.  No housing is available on our farm and the Assistant Grower is expected to make arrangements for their own housing in our area.

To apply for this position, please send a resume and brief letter of interest to our Farm Manager, Erinn Roberts, by email at erinn [at] communityfarms.org
