Education Program Manager

Green City Growers has developed a comprehensive cross-curricular garden education program for school children grades K-12, adaptable for in-school, after school programs, and summer camp environments. Students work with our horticultural education specialists to learn everything they need to know about growing their own food, coupled with food systems, food justice and nutrition education.

Our education programs are growing and we are looking for a Garden Education Manager to join our team. This position will specialize in supporting the development and ongoing success of our education-focused programs with an emphasis on youth gardening, but the candidate should expect to work with a variety of client types and ages from pre-schoolers to seniors. This is a full time position starting immediately. Salary commensurate upon experience: $40,000-$50,000/year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Farming and/or vegetable gardening experience
  • Garden education or teaching experience
  • Experience developing educational curriculum
  • Must be able to pass a CORI check
  • Some administrative experience and comfort with technology/computers
  • Detail oriented with a demonstrated commitment to high quality work
  • Strong time management and organizational abilities, with the ability to work in a very fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, positive attitude, and professional demeanor
  • Flexible schedule – some weekend days may be required, occasionally days run long
  • Willingness and ability to perform physically challenging work in all weather conditions
  • A love of the outdoors, farming, working with students of all ages, and urban renewal!

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with seniors
  • Experience in cooking and nutrition
  • Experience with community organizing
  • Grant writing or proposal writing experience a plus

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Manage a variety of education programs and other clients’ gardens throughout the Greater Boston area to plant, maintain, and harvest according to GCG’s horticultural practices. We use all organic management techniques, including OMRI approved pesticides and fungicides.
  • Lead one-on-one and group garden education programs for adults and children at residential, school, after school, summer camp, employee wellness, and senior living community sites.
  • Prepare for and document daily work in our online systems, including Google Calendar, Google Forms, and Insightly
  • Implement new program content and modify existing programs to serve appropriate age levels (lesson plans, activities, and projects), supporting curriculum activities for all company programs that involve teaching or working with groups in the garden.
  • Management of interns, crew members, and volunteer groups may occasionally be required
  • Phone support of our remote garden educator in NY
  • Attend regular weekly meetings with the horticultural staff to discuss problems/solutions, methods and materials.
  • Run regular weekly meetings with the educational staff to discuss problems/solutions, teaching methods and behavioral management, and curriculum.
  • Train and support education staff
  • Coordinate with point-people at school garden programs to ensure quality of programs and curriculum coordination with school requirements
  • Work with marketing and sales staff to develop education program collateral
  • Support grant writing and sales process to secure new education programs
  • Manage data collection for grant requirements at school programs
  • Department budgeting for education program materials and expenses
  • Manage quality control of education programs
