Brookwood hiring market assistants and field crew!

Brookwood Community Farm is a 6-acre farm that grows diversified vegetables and flowers in Milton, MA. Using organic methods (not certified) we provide produce for a 230-member CSA, the Roslindale Farmer’s Market, a food access market in Mattapan, and donations to local food pantries. As a non-profit community farm we are open to the public and offer educational and volunteer opportunities for our CSA members, youth and corporate groups.

Farmer’s Market Assistant 2015

We are looking for folks to help staff our stand at the Roslindale Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. We are looking for responsible individuals with great customer service skills to help with all aspects of set up, sales, and takedown at market. Retail experience and an interest in cooking/gardening is preferred, though not required. You must be able to follow and directions, work quickly and efficiently, and keep a smile on your face throughout a long and hectic day. You must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, stand up for 7 hours with only one break, and be able to safely lift 40 lbs in any kind of weather. You must be reliable and punctual and have a fantastic attitude. You also must be committed to great customer service and friendly with market customers. We see our market customers as members of the Brookwood community, and want to make sure they have a good experience shopping with us.

About the Position
You will work every Saturday June 6th- Nov 21st 7:30am-2:30pm. You will meet at and leave from Adams Park in Roslindale; you do not need to come to the farm. You will assist with all aspects of unloading the truck, setting up the stand, creating displays, restocking products, selling to the public, breaking down the stand, and packing the truck at the end of the day. You will also need to attend a three hour training and orientation session on Saturday May 30.

You will work under the direction of Brookwood staff including the Assistant Farm Manager, and Farm Apprentices. You may assist with any other tasks that may come up at market such as making signs and record keeping.

Compensation
You will be paid $10 /hour, produce from the stand, and discounts on produce we resell from other farms such as fruit and corn. We may be able to negotiate one or two Saturdays off, unpaid, depending on the schedule.

Field Crew 2015

About You:
We seek individuals who are mature, enthusiastic, in good physical condition and able to do fast-paced, detail-oriented work. Some manual labor or farm experience preferred but not necessary. Applicants should be able to lift 50 pounds, sustain focus & pace through repetitive tasks, work outside in all weather conditions, and enjoy getting dirty. Ideal candidates work well as part of a team, and quick learners, and take direction well. You also need a reliable form of transportation to the farm as we are not accessible by public transit.

Job Responsibilities:
The Field Crew will work in the fields at all 3 sites that we grow on, focusing primarily on weeding and harvesting, but will also be involved in planting and other farming tasks as needed. Crew members will learn practical skills including how to use farm tools and how to harvest and handle produce.
The field crew will work together as a group and alongside the full-season farm crew and will be supervised by the assistant farm manager. Field Crew members will work Monday-Friday 7am-12:30pm. The job runs June-August, but exact dates can vary on a case by case basis.

Compensation:
$9/hr and produce from the farm.
