Apprenticeships at Weir River Farm

Sustainably-grown 4 acre CSA and market farm seeks 2 apprentices for the 2014 seasonal crew at our diverse vegetable operation. Responsibilities include assisting with crop production, greenhouse work, field preparations and tillage, spraying, hand and mechanical cultivation, harvesting, and distribution/farmers market work.

Applicants to the apprenticeship positions must be trustworthy, reliable, up for the challenge of physically demanding tasks, long work hours, and the fast pace of the farm season. We work efficiently in all types of weather—rain, sun, wind, and cold—and consistently meet quality and production standards. Interacting with the public and working with other farm crew members and volunteers of all ages are key aspects to success here.  Apprentices must work well both independently and as part of a team, be able to follow directions, and have an excellent work ethic and energetic attitude.

The farmer training component is a highlight of this apprenticeship and includes participation in Eastern Mass CRAFT workshops, a collaboratively developed personal curriculum based on identified learning goals, in-the-field experience and classroom instruction, work exchange opportunities at other local farms, and a small education stipend.  If you want to learn and develop as a vegetable grower, this is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and deepen your skill set.

This is a 30-week, full-time seasonal position from the April through October 2014. Hours range from 40-55/week throughout the season. The work week runs from Tuesday to Saturday from May to October and includes two evenings a month during that time.  Compensation includes hourly pay starting at $10.50/hour (or more for experienced applicants), discounts on farm eggs and meat, farm vegetables, paid vacation days, worker’s comp, and health insurance. There is a possibility of on-farm housing.

Vegetable production experience is preferred.  A valid driver’s license and clean driving record, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and a CORI check is required.

Weir River Farm, located in Hingham, Massachusetts, is a property of the Trustees of Reservations. The farm sustainably raises vegetables and livestock and provides educational opportunities for adults and youth. The 4 acre vegetable operation distributes organically-grown produce through a Community Supported Agriculture program, a local farmer’s market, restaurants and hunger relief donations.

Interested candidates should send cover letters and resumes to Rory O’Dwyer, at rodwyer (AT) ttor (DOT) org. Positions open until filled.
